DANIEL FRANKLIN WARD, PhD, is a folklorist, historian and an independent consultant in cultural research, cultural resources management and presentation. He has directed research, fieldwork, documentation, development, production and presentation historical projects for various organizations throughout the United States. Since 2005 Dr. Ward has co-directed a statewide consortium of organizations and individuals who have developed a number of Erie Canal-related projects conducted in ports along the length of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor.

The most recent of these efforts is a documentary film, BOOM AND BUST: AMERICA’S JOURNEY ON THE ERIE CANAL. This film, co-produced by Dr. Ward and and Steve Zeitlin and directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker, Paul Wagner, is a meditation on economic cycles and the American Dream. This remarkable film tells the story of industrial expansion and decline along the Erie Canal, and examines its impact on the lives of workers in steel , grain, textiles and shipping. In the wake of economic collapse, can the people of America’s cities find meaning and worth?
